Chain vs. DAG

Scroll to watch two ledgers grow side by side.

Chain: accepted / orphaned —
BlockDAG: blocks included —
  1. In a classic chain, one block wins per time slot. Parallel blocks are discarded as orphans — grey on the left.
  2. BlockDAG keeps them. GHOSTDAG orders parallel blocks, so they stay in the ledger instead of being thrown away.
  3. Since the Crescendo upgrade (May 2025), Kaspa runs at 10 blocks per second.

The basics, short

Proof-of-Work and BlockDAG

Kaspa uses proof-of-work. Its BlockDAG lets parallel blocks coexist, and GHOSTDAG orders them.

Fair launch

Fair launch in November 2021. No pre-mine.

Supply

Maximum about 28.7 billion KAS. Block rewards shrink monthly and halve over one year.

Mining

Mining uses kHeavyHash. Today it is done with ASICs.

Toccata upgrade

Live since about 30 June 2026. Covenants: coins can carry enforceable spending rules. Verification of zero-knowledge proofs.

Silverscript 1.0

Released in September 2026. A language for writing covenants.

Beginner tips

  • To buy KAS in Switzerland, use regulated trading venues. Check the regulation first.
  • Use your own wallet. Keep the seed phrase offline and never share it.
  • Official wallet: Kaspa NG
